Disney’s Marvel’s fake-out extravaganza

Presented as the epic conclusion to a decade of “cinematic universe” build-up, Marvel’s Avengers: Infinity War (2018) is actually the first half of a two-parter. It’s not that the movie has a somber ending so much as that it has no ending at all. Following the latest in a series of skirmishes with big bad Thanos, the Avengers take a breather and the movie sort of cuts to black – a “To be continued” on par with The Matrix Reloaded (2003).

Review: Thor: Ragnarok

Thor! King of the impossible!

The third in Marvel’s string of so-so Thor flicks, Thor: Ragnarok (2017) makes a hard right for slapstick and giggles, aping the juvenile tone and humor of the more successful Guardians of the Galaxy movies while foregoing any and every pretense of seriousness whatsoever. This makes for more palatable, bubbly action-adventure, and certainly makes the earlier movies look even duller by comparison.

Review: Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 (2017)

A spoiler-free review if you ever so much as watched TV.

You may or may not be tired of the so-called Marvel Cinematic Universe but if there’s one thing that separated Guardians of the Galaxy (2014) from its slew of superhero flicks was that it was a comedy first and a blockbuster piece second. Something that holds true of its sequel, aptly called Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 (2017).
