Del Toro is gone and so is the magic.

It’s tempting to think of Pacific Rim Uprising (2018) less as a sequel to Guillermo del Toro‘s mecha-vs.-kaiju love letter Pacific Rim (2013) and more as a franchise pitch, retconning any sense of urgency or achievement from the original movie while laying down the groundwork to “expand the universe”, as director Steven S. DeKnight has said. “You can go main canon, you can go spin-offs, you can go one-offs,” he goes on to fawn in the same interview.

Review: Star Wars: The Last Jedi

Spoiler-free judgment.

Continuing the process of mirroring the original trilogy movie by movie, Star Wars: The Last Jedi (2017) is a send-off of The Empire Strikes Back (1981), albeit a feeble one. Though it supplies some entertaining action-adventure and strikes emotional notes as characters find closure to their arcs, as a “dark middle” for the new trilogy it’s quite tame.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi – Teaser Trailer

Following the February reveal of Episode VIII’s title – “The Last Jedi”, ominously written in red as opposed to the traditional yellow – a teaser trailer was finally released yesterday. The hype is strong in this one.
